Building certification without the box-ticking

How we approach BREEAM, WELL and Fitwel so certification strengthens the design instead of distracting from it.

Sustainability certification is too often treated as a box-ticking exercise, led by assessors with limited knowledge of how healthy, efficient buildings are designed and run. We take a different view: certification should be built into the design from day one, so the credits a project earns reflect how it actually performs.

Our approach

  • Simplicity, transparency and close collaboration with the whole project team.
  • Capturing the easy wins early and aligning the targeting strategy with project goals.
  • Phasing delivery to match design and construction stages.
  • Spotting risks early, so non-compliance is fixed before it becomes expensive.
  • Clear tasks and responsibilities, so every discipline owns its part.

In practice

At Gartner’s London headquarters we aligned the base build and CAT B works with WELL criteria to achieve WELL Gold, targeting credits precisely so the client’s budget and the architectural ambition were both protected. At Farnborough Aerospace Park our designs supported a BREEAM Excellent rating across two refurbished buildings.

If you are planning a project with a certification target, speak to the team about how we can help.
